Asus is official in ZenFone 6. At a press event in Spain, the Taiwanese computing giant unveiled the new ZenFone 6 smartphone on Thursday. The Asus ZenFone 6 is the company’s first smartphone with a rotating’ flip’ camera, set to be a successor to last year’s flagship ZenFone 5Z. The company has chosen a flipping camera in an effort to reduce bezels and provide an all-screen front.
The phone has a dual camera setup that normally resides on the back, but it rotates when necessary to become a selfie shooter. Asus appears to be following Samsung’s footsteps, which also launched last month a rotating camera smartphone in the form of Galaxy A80. Thanks to its affordable pricing, the smartphone is set to compete with Samsung and Apple’s OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro instead of more premium flagships.
Unlike the rotating camera implementation of Samsung in Galaxy A80, which also required the camera to rise from its base position, implementation of Asus is relatively straightforward. On the back of the Asus ZenFone 6, the motorized dual-camera setup simply rotates vertically to face the phone user. Interestingly, Asus also allows users of ZenFone 6 to control the amount of rotation, allowing users to stop the midway rotation to take pictures at interesting angles. The company has also added camera module fall-protection, which will automatically retract the camera to its base position if the phone detects sudden movement-similar to how the pop-camera of OnePlus 7 Pro retracts.
Asus ZenFone 6 sports a full-screen front with a 3D curved glass covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and back. It’s not a very attractive smartphone and looks like a giant metal and glass slab.
